Abstract

The present article depicts the complexity and multitude of socialization processes occurring during adolescence. Based on empirical studies and tackling the constant interaction of different types of societal diversity, we show how youth today grow into various social roles. First, we offer an in-depth conceptualization of socialization and processes at play underlying this construct. Second, we focus on the interaction between different socializing contexts (family, peers, and school) and individual characteristics that shape adolescents' socialization. Finally, we draw attention on gender, ethnic-racial and religious socialization as substantial contributors to socialization processes in times of growing diversity.
